Aia Vecchia, Vermentino, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy, 2021
CRISP WHITE PEACH, LIGHT & LIVELY, GLIMMERING MINERALITY
Maremma, on the Tyrrhenian Sea and including much of Tuscany and part of Lazio, is home to some of the area’s most dynamic wines. Here, the Pellegrini family has cultivated Vermentino for generations, making it something of a specialty alongside its better-known reds. In this example, the grape shows off its Mediterranean colors via bright acidity, white peach, citrus, and insistent minerality that adds a vibrant focus.
Serving Suggestion: Steamed mussels w/ garlic, parsley, & lemon. Spider rolls (tempura soft-shelled crab). Spinach artichoke pizza w/ a Caesar salad.
