The best wines of the 40-mile vertical expanse that is Saint-Joseph typically come from the northernmost and southernmost reaches of the appellation. The Barou estate (now biodynamic and organic since 1975 – before it was hip!) is of the former persuasion, crafting beautiful, bright reds like this one – brimming with darkly vivid fruit and lively spice. Emmanuel, representing the estate’s current generation, took over from his forward-thinking father, Alexis, in 1997.
