Johann Fitz is now the ninth generation leading the estate, with Jochen Goebel by his side as winemaker, looking after 26 hectares in the Bad Dürkheim. The Fitz’ are founding members of the VDP, which is the world’s oldest association of premium German wine estates, wherein they utilize their own classification system apart from Germany’s national wine laws. Taking after France, focus lies on vineyard sites rather than sugar levels/ripeness at harvest, here with VDP Orstwein indicating the grapes come from a single village, very similar to France’s villages designation.
Serving Suggestion: Bavarian potato salad. Apricot kuchen (German fruit (or cheese) filled yeast cake). Seared scallops w/gingery cucumber salad.
