Casa Los Frailes, Monastrell Viñas Viejas "1711", Valencia, Spain 2020
{biodynamic} Monastrell
BLACK CHERRY, IRON & FOREST BARK, SANDALWOOD & VIOLET
This old vine cuvée is a palate-pleasing palindrome, taking its name from the year during the Enlightenment that the estate’s Valásquez family bought what had formerly been the vineyards and winery of local friars. Southeastern Spain is the origin of Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre), and this version brims with the brooding power that the variety is famous for, while showing elegance with velvety, mature tannin, supple fruit, and soft oak.
Serving Suggestions: Dry-aged steak w/ roasted red peppers & shallots. Thick-sliced morcilla sausage fried in olive oil on bread. Creamy baked portobello & rice casserole w/ sherry sauce.
