Despite its mysterious origins and relatively recent Piemontese ascent (first noted in the late 1700s), Barbera is handily the dominant variety of Italy’s northwest, accounting for over a third of local vineyard acreage. While some modern examples have become positively massive, this beautifully balanced specimen is decidedly broad-shouldered yet maintains freshness with gleamingly dark fruit, sage, baking spice, and tobacco. Yum!
