Bodegas Pazo das Tapias, Mencia “Alma de Autor,” Monterrei, Galicia, Spain 2018
60% Mencia, 40% Arauxa (Tempranillo)
FRESHNESS & DEPTH. CHERRY, COCOA, VANILLA, CEDAR, & SPICE
Tempranillo (called Arauxa in Galician) is Spain’s most-planted varietal- but in Northwestern Spain, Mencia dominates. Blending the two grapes marries floral aromatics, fresh fruit flavors, and acidity with body, intensity and a pleasantly lingering finish. Aging in French and American oak seals the deal with softened yet persistant tannins, toastiness, and hints of cinnamon & spices: a fantastic harmony of brightness and body.
Serving Suggestion: Beef, veal & pork meatballs in tomato sauce w/ crusty bread. Steak au poivre. Ras el hanout-seasoned pork skewers, char-grilled.
