Weingut Staffelter Hof, Weiss "Portugeezer", Mosel, Germany 2020
{organic} Arinto, Fernão Pires
LEMON ZEST & HONEYDEW, HAZY & HEFEWEIZEN-ESQUE
Featuring Portuguese varieties transplanted onto the unlikely slopes of Germany’s Mosel, this breathtakingly bizarre beast comes straight out of the cabinet of curiosities. This “natural wine” is cloudy with a bold, citrusy attack and a funky finish. Jan Klein’s experimental planting of Fernão Pires and Arinto was partially inspired by a desire to see what increasing temperatures in German vineyards might render possible, and the name, “Portu-Geezer,” is a play on words, referencing the unrelated central European variety, Blauer Portugieser. Silly Jan!
Serving Suggestion: Vietnamese vermicelli w/ grilled pork, shrimp, lemongrass, basil, & fish sauce. Savory red bean rice dumplings.
