Chateau Raspail, Gigondas, Rhone Valley, France 2020
{sustainable} 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre
FIRM BLACK RASPBERRY, CACAO & SPICE, BROAD-SHOULDERED YET LITHE
The chateau among the vineyards of Raspail was erected in the mid-1800s courtesy of money earned by Eugene Raspail, the estate’s young heir when he turned a recently excavated Roman statue for a handsome profit. Today, the estate’s chateau and 43 hectares belong to the Meffre family, whose presence as vignerons in the Southern Rhone spans many generations. True to form, sterner than the wines of Vacqueyras, and less voluptuously perfumed than those of Chateauneuf, this Gigondas represents a darker more angular face of the Southern Rhone while remaining generous.
Serving Suggestion: Stewed/braised venison shoulder & caramelized onions topped w/ scalloped potatoes. Duck cassoulet.
